The Folio should be useful to researchers, teachers, students, government officials, business people and citizens generally.
The Folio consists of a set of sixteen individually bound chapters suitable for keeping in a three ring binder.
The topics for these chapters were selected on the basis of scientific and professional judgement and consultations with people living in the area, notably the Long Point World Biosphere Reserve Committee.
The chapters have mainly been developed from a set of eighteen papers prepared to provide background information for the Folio. The background reports were largely prepared by students working in the Heritage Resources Centre, University of Waterloo. The chapters in the Folio are largely summaries of the background reports.
The research began in 1992 with the award of a grant from the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. The final background reports were completed by early 1995. In preparing the Folio chapters from the background reports, the editors have done some updating, particularly as a result of additions, requests or comments made by reviewers.
An attempt has been made to minimize the technical language in the Folio and to use as many maps, graphs and illustrations as possible in the belief that this would make the Folio easier to understand and use in decision-making.
The editors while generally attempting to be concise and use simple language, have so far as possible followed the wording of the authors of the background reports.
The Folio chapters are largely descriptive and analytical but they sometimes contain recommendations which are those of the original authors and not the editors.
We offer many thanks to the many people who worked on and helped with the Folio. We also offer many thanks to agencies and groups which gave financial support: the Royal Canadian Geographical Society; the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council; the Heritage Resources Centre, the University of Waterloo; the Long Point Foundation; the Long Point World Biosphere Reserve Committee; the Donner Foundation; and the Laidlaw Foundation.
