Site Monitoring

Site Monitoring:

A survival assessment was conducted for this planting in mid-July. The complete assessment is included in Appendix II. Survival was excellent with 100 percent survival in most of the plots surveyed. The only species that seemed to be struggling were some red oak and sugar maple. Competition with weeds has been generally low.

Local Involvement and Coverage:

Involvement in this project has included a variety of individuals and organizations. With LPWBRF leading the project, the Long Point Region Conservation Authority partnered with the Foundation to help locate appropriate sites and provide tree planting advice and services. The Long Point Basin Land Trust also assisted with the location of appropriate planting sites. The landowners participated in various stages of the project such as site preparation, developing a planting plan, tree planting and maintenance. Also, members of the Norfolk Field Naturalists and others helped by volunteering to plant seedlings as part of Earth Day celebrations. Media coverage to date includes articles in the Norfolk Field Naturalists' Newsletter, Lotus (Volume 22, Issue 5, October 2000), and the popular local newspaper, the Port Rowan Good News (November 2000). The press release is included in Appendix I of this report.
