Site 2:
Interior Forest Enlargement
This planting site was located on a farm that specializes in growing native wetland plants for restoration projects. The farm includes existing forest and is adjacent and connected to a large forest block known as the South Walsingham Sand Ridges Forest Complex. See map on page 5 for location. About 3.5 acres was planted on this farm which has helped to increase forest interior and reduce forest edge.
Prior to planting, the field was farmed and had been most recently planted in rye. Once the rye was harvested, little site preparation was needed since the soil in this area is dry, relatively infertile sand. Seedlings for this site were ordered and delivered through LPRCA. Species used were very diverse and include the following.

The species mix planted is reflective of the diversity of the area. On this site, the landowners held a volunteer planting event with 13 people on Earth Day to plant most of the seedlings. The remainder were planted by the landowners. Site maintenance is also the responsibility of the landowners.
