Community Participation

Indicate whether you consider the participation of local communities to be satisfactory, and, if not, what measures are envisaged to improve this situation.

Yes. The LPBR always welcomes more support and participation in its activities, and the level of community interest varies with the topics it decides to address. It is also dependent upon volunteer leadership to carry out particular projects.

The biosphere reserve group has to consider the extent to which it can, or should be involved in "management issues" which become the subject of local disputes. For some issues, it has provided a forum function for an exchange of information and expressions of public concerns. The balance between advocating conservation and sustainable resource use generally, and involvement in situations in which this is not being done, is a "judgement call" for the executive committee.
