Forest Monitoring Status Report:
The Long Point World Biosphere Reserve Foundation, in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution, Environment Canada's Ecological Monitoring and Assessment Network, Long Point Region Conservation Authority, and Turkey Point Provincial Park, has established 4 one hectare long-term forest biodiversity monitoring plots. The first plot was established in Backus Woods in 1995 and was re-inventoried in 2000 and 2003. The second plot was established in the Wilson Tract in 1995 and re-inventoried in 2003. The third and fourth plots were established in Turkey Point Provincial Park in 1996 and re-inventoried in 2003. Current activities include monitoring of vegetation, terrestrial salamanders and arboreal lichens. The Status Report describes the results of the initial and subsequent inventories. The Site Report describes the biophysical and cultural components of the Biosphere Reserve and each plot. The User Guide describes the monitoring protocols and data management system.
