Sustainable Tourism
The Long Point World Biosphere Reserve Foundation supports the definition of sustainable tourism, as defined by Parks Canada and the Tourism Industry Association of Canada as: “Tourism which actively fosters appreciation and stewardship of the natural, cultural and historic resources & special places by local residents, the tourism industry, governments and visitor. It is tourism which can be sustained over the long term because it results in a net benefit for the social, economic, natural and cultural environments of the area in which it takes place.”
The Long Point World Biosphere Reserve Foundation (LPWBRF) identified sustainable tourism as a strategic priority after hosting a series of local community workshops in 2006. Since that time a Sustainable Tourism Stakeholder’s Group was formed, consisting of local tourism operators, organizations and government representatives; a series of workshops and strategic planning sessions have been held, and in 2010, the LPWBRF authored a report entitled, Eco-Tourism Development in Norfolk County: Eco-Destinations and Use of Web-based Interpretative Products, Part 1. Nature Trails, Waterways and Cycling Routes, with funding provided by the Southwest Community Development Fund.
