Protecting nature in the Long Point Biosphere Region
The world is facing an unprecedented biodiversity crisis, with habitat loss and environmental changes threatening countless species. In response, global leaders have set an ambitious goal: to protect 30% of the planet’s lands and waters by 2030. This initiative, known as 30 by 30, is a crucial step toward safeguarding biodiversity, ensuring ecological balance, and securing a sustainable future for all.
What is 30 by 30?
30 by 30 is an international conservation target adopted under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. The goal is to protect and conserve at least 30% of the world’s terrestrial and marine areas by 2030 through effectively managed protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs).
For Canada, a country rich in natural landscapes and diverse ecosystems, achieving this target is a national priority. Through federal, provincial, Indigenous, and non-governmental efforts, Canada is expanding its network of conserved areas, contributing to this global movement.
