Sustainable Communities

What is a Sustainable Community?

A sustainable community is a place where people, nature, and local traditions are cared for together. It protects the clean water, forests, wetlands, farms, wildlife, small businesses, and gathering places that make a region feel like home. In Norfolk County, the Long Point Biosphere Region works with community partners to support healthy, resilient communities across its core area, buffer zone, and area of cooperation. One way this work comes to life is through sustainable tourism—helping people experience the region’s beaches, trails, farms, wildlife, and natural beauty in ways that respect and protect them.

What is Sustainable Tourism?

Sustainable tourism is about welcoming people in while caring for what makes a place special. It encourages residents, visitors, businesses, and governments to work together so travel experiences protect natural areas, celebrate local culture and history, and support the people who live and work here. At its best, sustainable tourism helps visitors slow down, notice more, and leave with a deeper connection to the community.

Sustainable Tourism Matters

Sustainable tourism matters because the way people visit a place shapes how it feels, grows, and thrives. Visitors increasingly want experiences that are authentic, responsible, and connected to the local community. They may not use the word “sustainable,” but they often look for businesses, attractions, and communities that make thoughtful choices visible. Clear information, welcoming language, and strong environmental practices help visitors feel confident that their trip supports the people and places they came to enjoy.

Long Point Biosphere Region Sustainable Tourism Projects

Amazing Places invites people to discover meaningful natural and cultural destinations across the Long Point region. Each place tells a story about the land, water, wildlife, and people who care for them, encouraging visitors to explore with curiosity, respect, and wonder.

Through the Connect to Nature Collaborative, we partner with Birds Canada and the Long Point Land Basin Trust to offer nature-based activities for all ages. These experiences support sustainable tourism by helping residents and visitors explore responsibly, learn about local habitats and wildlife, and build a stronger connection to the places they visit.

Success Stories

The Connect to Nature Collaborative supports sustainable tourism through birding, guided hikes, and hands-on stewardship experiences offered with the Long Point Biosphere Region, Birds Canada, and the Long Point Land Basin Trust. These activities help people of all ages explore responsibly, learn about local habitats and wildlife, and build lasting connections to the natural places they visit.
