Biosphere Film Premiere and celebration open to the public
(For release – October 10, 2023) “A Priority Place”, a new full-length documentary film on efforts to preserve biodiversity and build sustainable communities in Norfolk County and the Long Point Biosphere Region, will premiere on Friday November 10, 2023 at Capitol 33 in Delhi. A cocktail reception and presentation will introduce the film which celebrates the region’s 5th anniversary as a federally designated “Priority Place.”
In 2018, the Long Point/Walsingham Forest area was picked by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) as the first “Priority Place” in Ontario. The designation made the region eligible for special funding and support under the Pan-Canadian Approach to Transforming Species at Risk Conservation. The documentary film showcases the resulting conservation work and collaborations involving a host of government and non-government organizations.
“The enthusiasm, commitment, and impact of the people featured in the film really gives you hope that we can preserve and foster our very special place in the world,” said Tom Via, Chair of the Long Point Biosphere Region. “It’s truly uplifting and inspiring.”
Already recognized as a UNESCO World Biosphere, our region gained the Priority Place designation in recognition of its status as a unique stretch of Carolinian Forest, home to many endangered species, and an area in which organizations work together in restoration, road mortality mitigation, invasive species eradication, and nature education.
“The film really is a celebration of passionate people and the local conservation community, “ said Cynthia Brink, manager of the film project. “It’s quite moving.”
The film’s producer Gregg McLachlan from WorkCabin Creative, an award-winning journalist and conservationist, will introduce the documentary at the premiere event.
“In my work, I have seen many impressive conservation projects and committed people around the world,” McLachlan said. “But few can match the combination of enthusiasm, collaborative efforts, and impact of those featured in this film.”
A limited number of tickets to the event ($50 per person – 6:30 PM Reception – 7:00 PM film showing) is being made available to the general public as well as Biosphere partners and supporters. Proceeds will fund the Long Point Biosphere public outreach and student education programs.

As one of Canada’s 19 Biosphere Reserves designated by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Long Point Biosphere provides support for research, monitoring, education and information exchange related to local, national and global issues of conservation and development.
This year’s research and conservation conference is, once again, an excellent opportunity for academic and student researchers, government agencies, members of NGO’s and the public to take part in an exchange of ideas related to local environmental sustainability and conservation. Being one of Canadas Priority Places we look forward to showcasing a broad range of research topics and themes within the Long Point Region Watershed.

Chances to Influence, Learn, and Celebrate
Members and supporters of the Long Point Biosphere Region (LPBR) had three exciting opportunities to enhance their involvement in and contributions to the Biosphere in the coming weeks. They offered fun and informative ways to influence our work as well as to learn and celebrate achievements.
On Wednesday October 25, 2023, from 6:30 – 8:30 PM (Registration at 6:PM), the LPBR held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Port Dover Community Centre. The AGM was open to everyone, but members were able to vote on specific administrative and policy issues. The AGM is also a chance for the Board to answer questions about recent and planned initiatives such as those highlighted in our recent newsletter. .
Just over a month later, we held the 2023 Long Point Biosphere Research and Conservation Conference, the 11th annual such gathering. The Conference took place Friday 3 November 2023 from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm also at the Port Dover Community Centre. .
Then the following week, we held the Premiere of the new full-length documentary film “A Priority Place” and a Celebration of Biodiversity in Norfolk County: November 10th – 2023 6:30 PM – $50 per person – Reception – 7:00 PM Film Showing – Capitol 33, Delhi. Please note: you do not need to be a member to attend the AGM; however, you must be a member in good standing to be able to vote at the AGM. Those wishing to renew their annual membership may do so at the AGM in cash or by cheque.

Tiny Win for Turtles
While out patrolling local roads for turtles and other wildlife, Lauren Rego, a Master’s student from the University of Waterloo, came across a heartbreaking sight. A painted turtle had been hit by a car. Her eggs were scattered on the road, and some were still inside her. Lauren gently collected the eggs, rinsed them off with care, and placed them in an incubator.
And guess what? One just hatched.
This tiny hatchling had absolutely no chance of surviving without that rescue. It’s the first successful hatchling we’ve had from a turtle killed on the road. It may be small, but it’s carrying that momma turtle’s legacy forward.
This is why we do what we do. Roads are one of the leading causes of turtle decline in Ontario, and every turtle saved matters.
We’re holding out hope for another clutch rescued from a rare Blanding’s Turtle later this season. But for now, we’re celebrating this little life.
