Biosphere’s First “Eco-Crawl” – Bayfest 2024

With support from Norfolk County and local partners, the Long Point Biosphere Region will be launching an annual excursion called the “Eco-Crawl” in conjunction with Port Rowan’s Bayfest celebrations on Saturday August 31, 2024 – Labour Day Weekend 2024.

The initiative has been awarded support under the Norfolk County Community Grants Program.  The funding will cover the cost of bus shuttle services to help visitors and residents learn more about conservation organizations such as Birds Canada and sustainable businesses such as Long Point Eco-Adventures,  Burning Kiln Winery, Inasphere Winery and Farm, South Coast Gardens, and more. We also intend to celebrate our Long Point Turtle Hatchery project with exhibitry for public viewings of the facilities and baby turtles. The Eco-Crawl will also promote visits to other sustainable tourism sites in the area. 

“The funding from Norfolk County gives us the greenlight to reach out to others and begin planning the Eco-Crawl stops,” said Tom Via, LPBR Chair, adding that the Biosphere will collaborate with community organizations for maximum impact. “We have a rich portfolio in the Biosphere’s Amazing Places program already and are looking forward to celebrating the work of our other friends.”

In announcing the Community Grants funding, Norfolk County noted the unique approaches applicants offered to meeting priorities in environmental conservation.  Mayor Amy Martin commended recipients such as the Long Point Biosphere saying, “your dedication to enhancing the quality of life in Norfolk County is inspiring.”

Keeping cool: restoring natural areas with native plants can lower temperatures

Have you ever gone for a walk in the woods and thought the air felt a little cooler than where you entered the woods from? Chances are that it is. It’s likely cooler than your street, yard, or even the agricultural field nearby. These local temperature differences are real and noticeable.

Jonas Hamberg, a researcher from the University of Waterloo, looks closely at the temperatures of ecosystems. According to Jonas, looking at ecosystems from above and taking their temperature using thermal imaging can give us insight into their health beyond what we may see – or at times not be able to see – on the surface, and can let us know if restoration efforts are on the right track.

Originally from Sweden, Jonas has spent time working and studying in India, Brazil, South Africa, the U.S., and now Canada. Through his interest in restoration, he developed an interest in ecosystem energy balances and how ecosystems use solar energy in different ways.

His research involves looking at the big picture – literally. He uses drones and satellites, including NASA Landsat satellites and a thermal camera on the International Space Station (ISS) called ECOSTRESS, to gather images and measure the heat coming off the surface of restoration areas and look at how temperatures at these areas change over time.

A primary site for Jonas’ research is right here in Norfolk County. Here, the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) has been undertaking large restoration projects to restore hundreds of hectares of forest, woodland, and tallgrass prairie. Working alongside NCC, Jonas has made some interesting findings with implications for climate change adaptation.

“I looked at how the temperature has changed in restoration areas over the last 12 years and found that they have decreased in temperature by about 4.5 degrees in summer daytime temperatures in that time. This is because the plants take in the solar energy that comes in and they use it for processes like photosynthesis and transpiration much more effectively than if that area was agriculture or unused.”

Rising temperatures are a concerning effect of climate change. Scientists have high confidence that global temperatures will continue to rise for decades to come, largely due to greenhouse gases produced by human activities. Among the impacts of rising temperatures are longer and more intense heat waves, which can be deadly for humans, animals, and plants.

Jonas notes the direct connection his research has to climate change: “I don’t know how big of an effect this has globally on large scale climate change, but it does have a big effect locally. Being able to say, ‘if you restore this area, that will cool it,’ will have an effect not just on creating habitat for animals who wouldn’t be able to deal with the heat as temperatures increase, but also cooling the area for humans and people living nearby which can help improve quality of life and create local adaptations to climate change. It’s more than just holding carbon in trees, restoring forests and such should have an overall net cooling effect.”

His work may be mostly looking from above using thermal images, but to understand the cooling process Jonas also does a lot of on-the-ground monitoring. This involves identifying and measuring the plants as well as using vegetation data recorded by NCC staff over the last 12 years, and then comparing that to the thermal imagery to see the connections.

“At one site, I think we identified 44,000 individual plants,” he said. “We found that the more biodiversity, the more different species of plants, the more the temperature decreased.”

It seems that native plants also play an important role. Jonas’ research points towards a correlation between native species and cooling. Overall, one additional plant species decreased temperatures by about 0.3 degrees, and only so for native species. Like many cautious scientists, Jonas says this with an asterisk beside it, noting that more study is needed to say this definitively.

“It makes sense though,” he explains. “Non-native species tend to spread and take up a lot of space, but native species are better adapted to the site. For example, native species in tallgrass prairie ecosystems have deeper roots than non-native plants to take up water on hot, dry summer days, and they seem to have more mycorrhizal connections to other parts of the ecosystem. These things make them more efficient at transpiration, photosynthesis, and taking up energy, thereby cooling the area more.”
Jonas’ research points towards the importance of restoration with biodiversity and native species in mind to produce healthy ecosystems capable of cooling local temperatures. However, these elements are sometimes overlooked in restoration efforts. While organizations like NCC have good track records in restoration and ecological monitoring, Jonas notes that the unfortunate reality is that not all do: “when companies do restoration, they often do it the cheapest way possible, and that’s often using few species, and often not native species. There’s also often not enough money or interest in post-restoration monitoring. That’s a problem.”

As more research like Jonas’ comes out which shows the mitigation effect restoration efforts and biodiversity can have against climate change, there is hope that more and more companies and people will realize that the cost of doing nothing, or the bare minimum, is greater than the cost of effective restoration and developing healthy ecosystems. Thermal imaging may provide a helpful tool in checking the pulse of restored areas. It can help detect if progress is being made through cooler temperatures, or in the case of a temperature spike, can indicate something is going wrong that requires action which may otherwise be missed.

Some more good news: the majority of the satellite imagery Jonas works with is publicly accessible. While it may take some training to understand and use the data and information these images can provide, they have a lot of potential to help in ecological fields, and Jonas is hopeful more people will utilize it.

While this area of research shows promise, it may not be for everyone. There are many other ways communities and individuals can help with restoration and conservation, beginning with thinking about their own backyard.

“Coming from my research, don’t just think about trees,” Jonas affirms. “Trees are very important of course, and people tend to like trees a lot, but there’s more to vegetation. Think about planting tallgrass, shrubs, bushes, and more. Creating diversity and structure is important, especially for animals. Human development tends to get very flat and perfect, but nature wants little holes and nooks.”

Thoughtful reforestation and restoration practices which focus on native plants and increasing biodiversity can help us keep cool and adapt to rising temperatures connected to climate change at a local level. When looking at your yard, garden, or any outdoor space you have access to, think about planting a variety of local, native species. Study to protect Norfolk County’s Eastern Foxsnake

(July 2025) A study by the Long Point Biosphere Region in collaboration with faculty and students at the University of Waterloo has identified opportunities to protect the Eastern Foxsnake, a rare animal with a unique association to the region.  Over 70 percent of the snake’s remaining global population survives in just a few pockets along the Great Lakes in Ontario.  One of these is the southern part of Norfolk County.

The research team collected information and reviewed data over a 50-year period to protect the snake and conserve the species.  The results of this study, published recently in The Canadian Herpetologist, show that the snake sightings cluster around points where wildlife corridors and streams intersect with specific roadways.  This information will assist planners and engineers as they consider options for roadkill mitigation measures such as specially designed fencing.

“The Eastern Foxsnake faces many challenges, not only loss of habitat and risk of mortality from boat traffic,” says team lead Kari Gunson of Eco-Kare International. “It often crosses or basks on roads and is prone to road mortality due to its expansive length and some motorists even intentionally run them over”

Gunson says that engineering solutions such as riparian bridge crossings with funneling wing-walls are critcally important in Eastern Foxsnake hotspots.  One such location in Norfolk County is on County Road 60 at Big Creek.

The Foxsnake, which can grow to 1.75 metres (over five feet) in length, can be intimidating because its bright colouring and ability to mimic the sound of a rattlesnake, but it is non-venomous and essentially harmless to humans.  The snake also helps maintain a balanced ecosystem, keeps rodent populations in check, reduces the spread of disease, and supports sustainable agriculture through its use of farmland habitats.

Gunson notes that everyone can play a part in protecting the species by learning how to identify the snake and reporting sightings of it, alive or dead, to resources such as iNaturalist so the information can help future research and planning.

The study was undertaken within the framework of a collaboration agreement between Long Point Biosphere Region and the University of Waterloo signed in December 2023.

Art Exhibition Benefits Biosphere

JC Lee, a Norfolk County artist whose  paintings celebrate nature and rural landscapes with a touch of  emotion and fantasy, will be donating proceeds from an upcoming art show to the Long Point Biosphere Region and other local conservation organizations.

His “Magic of Norfolk” art exhibition will ran from August 10 to August 25, 2024 in the Mass Market Gallery space at Port Dover’s Beach Reads Bookstore.  The exhibition  showcased  oil and mixed media paintings of landscapes and wildlife in Norfolk County.  Though JC’s works are detailed and set in the reality of the natural world, their effect is magnified through the juxtaposition of varied colours, textures, patterns, composition and perspectives.  

“Because so much of my art has been inspired by Norfolk County’s natural environment, I wanted  to direct some of the proceeds to local organizations helping to protect it,” says the artist, who will be donating 30 per cent of all sales from the “Magic of Norfolk” to be split between the Long Point Biosphere, the Long Point Basin Land Trust, and ALUS Norfolk. 

JC will also donate 30 per cent of the proceeds from the sale of a specific painting, “The Black Sheep,” to Pride Haldimand Norfolk.  His latest painting titled “Hope” will be unveiled and on sale at the exhibition with his other works.

Long Point Biosphere Region Receives Funding to Enhance Biodiversity in Norfolk County

Biosphere reserves are located in areas rich in cultural and biological diversity and are models of communities living sustainably with nature.

Norfolk County has long been recognized as one of these exceptional places, with rich agricultural lands, vibrant ecosystems and some of the greatest diversity of plants and animalsin Canada. Residents value their interactions with nature, and Norfolk County has a history of rural landowners and farmers who practice sound land stewardship.

Since 1986, Norfolk has been home to the LongPoint Biosphere Region. Long Point is a remarkable representation of unique Great Lakes coastal ecosystems and a significant refuge for migrating birds. The Long Point Biosphere Region promotes research, monitoring, education, partnerships and sustainable communities in Norfolk County.

The Long Point Biosphere Region is pleased to receive funding from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Canada to increase biodiversity conservation efforts in Norfolk County. Biodiversity supports food security, the economy, health and our quality of life in the form of clean air and drinking water.

This funding will bring local employment opportunities to Norfolk County as well as reinforcing our culture of sustainable living. World Environment Day 2024

World Environment Day – June 5, 2024 –  is an international collaboration led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to stage events to promote environmental protection and awareness.  Millions of people participate in events around the world, and the Long Point Biosphere Region encourages everyone to use the occasion to learn more about the important issues facing the natural environment locally and globally.

In Norfolk County, you might visit some of the Amazing Places promoting sustainability in our area.  One local business that will be taking advantage of the occasion is the Joy Bakery Café in downtown Simcoe where information on the Biosphere and other local environmental organizations will be available.  The Joy Bakery Café has championed sustainable practices since it opened some seven years ago by, for example, ensuring its cups, straws, and other items are compostable and planting a tree for every day it has been in business. 

This practice has particular importance this year as World Environment Day 2024 will focus on land restoration, desertification and drought resilience. Land restoration is a key pillar of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), a rallying call for the revival of ecosystems all around the world, which are critical to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Watch for Wildlife on Local Roads this Spring

 

Now that the first turtles are emerging from their winter naps, motorists should start watching for them crossing local roads. That’s the message of a postcard being mailed out this week to all households in Norfolk County by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) in support of its Long Point Walsingham Forest Priority Place (LPWF) conservation project.

The front of the postcard features a painting by Long Point artist Cindy Presant of a Species at Risk Blanding’s Turtle being carried across a road while a snake, frog and snapping turtle wait their turn. The image of the hands helping the turtle was inspired by a photo of Long Point turtle rescuer John Everett, taken by his wife, Jan.

“Local photographers and nature lovers have reported seeing turtles much earlier this year so we want to get the message out to watch for wildlife crossing roads to as many people in the community as possible”, said Mandy Karch of the Ontario Road Ecology Group (OREG). “Drivers should also be watching for snakes, and on the first warm rainy spring nights, frogs and salamanders crossing”.

OREG is managing the working group addressing wildlife road mortality issues in the LPWF.  Drivers are encouraged to keep the postcard handy in their vehicles so they can refer to the following tips on safely helping wildlife seen on local roads:

  • Drive carefully in areas with wetlands and forests.
  • Stay safe. Check for on-coming traffic if you see an animal on the road. Never put yourself or other motorists in danger.
  • Let the animal cross on its own if it can do so safely.
  • If moving a turtle, take it in the direction it was headed.
  • Never pick a turtle up by the tail!
  • Don’t pick up adult Snapping Turtles unless you have experience. Use a car mat or stick to help it across.
  • Don’t take the animal somewhere new.

A handy car kit would include work gloves, a high visibility vest, hand sanitizer, pylons and a tote box.

The postcard also explains how to collect and record data on reptile and amphibian sightings on Norfolk County roads.

Take a picture and report your sighting to the Wildlife on Roads in Ontario iNaturalist project. Your observations will help identify road mortality “hotspots” where action can be taken to mitigate these sites.

Reducing road mortality of local reptiles and amphibians is one of five priorities identified within the Long Point Walsingham Forest Priority Place. Other priorities include: eliminating invasive species such as Phragmites, restoring and protecting tallgrass prairie habitat, preserving forests and treed swamps, and working with local farmers on managing and maintaining marginal farmland for wildlife habitat.

Hello Friends and Supporters of the Long Point Biosphere Region,
Your Long Point Biosphere Region team is very thankful for the continuing
support of our grant funders and loyal donors.

Your generous support of the Long Point Biosphere enabled our teams to expand our programming reach in
2024. Whilst we are very proud of our accomplishments during 2024, some of
which are described within this newsletter, we have an even more ambitious
plan for 2025 supporting biodiversity, conservation, and sustainability within the
Long Point Biosphere Region of Norfolk County.

I wish to acknowledge the new Directors who joined our volunteer board during
2024:

Sydney Clarysse (Project Lead Energy and Facilities @ Norfolk County) joined us
as Director and Board Secretary. Sydney, who holds a great passion for the
environment and sustainability, decided she could make a difference by joining
the volunteer Long Point Biosphere Board.

Stuart Mackenzie (Director of Strategic Assets at Bird Studies Canada) joined us
as Director at Large. Stuart brings our board his great love for Long Point,
combine with a deep operational expertise developed over 20 years with the
Long Point Bird Observatory.


Jeff Hopkins (Partner at Grosman Gale Fletcher Hopkins LLP) joined us as
Director at Large. In addition to Jeff’s recent commitment to the Long Point
Biosphere Region board, Jeff also serves as President of the Long Point Rate
Payers Association. Jeff brings our board his deep passion for the sustainability
of Long Point and his expertise in labour and employment law.
The Long Point Biosphere is very pleased to have welcomed these individuals as

During the next months we will share updates about some of our newest and
exciting priorities which include Long Point Shoreline Resilience Research,
research partnership with University of Waterloo School of Environment
Resources and Sustainability, and expanded partnership with Long Point Eco
Adventures featuring an expanded and interactive turtle egg rescue, incubator,
and hatchling release exhibit.

Long Point’s First-ever Hatchery releases 1,112 Baby Turtles

The Long Point Biosphere Region is celebrating the “amazing, heart-warming success” of its  2024 Turtle Hatchery Pilot Project and is seeking support to establish a permanent facility and program in Norfolk County.  This could include public education and outreach activities as well as turtle incubators and special care facilities.

The hatchery, the first of its kind in this area, resulted in the release of 1,112 baby turtles into local waters last summer.  All of them came from eggs collected in Norfolk County by volunteers who worked through the heat, rain, and bugs to save turtles crossing roads, protect nests, and gather those eggs from vulnerable locations.

Excavated Midland Painted, Snapping, and Northern Map turtle eggs were transported to the pilot-project hatchery at the Long Point Eco-Adventures (LPEA) Welcome Centre to incubate.  Close to 900 turtle babies resulted.  This constituted an exceptional 95 percent survival rate for the local hatchery.

Release included over 100 Threatened Blandings Turtles

The Turtle Lab at the London Watershed Conservation Centre supported the project by taking all eggs from Blanding’s Turtles, a threatened species.  An additional 127 hatchlings from these eggs formed an important part of the total Long Point release.

As many Norfolk County residents know, freshwater turtles risk their lives each spring to cross roads and lay their eggs, which, in turn, often fall to predators even before their hatchlings appear and undertake the treacherous race to the shoreline.  This loss has enormous consequences for the region as turtles are an ecological keystone species and can take up to twenty years to lay their first eggs.

The Long Point Biosphere volunteers and staff help turtles navigate roadkill hotspots and install nest protectors as well as excavating eggs.  In the past, these rescued turtle eggs were taken to facilities, like those in London, outside the region.  But in 2024, thanks to the support of LPEA, Long Point turtle eggs were incubated and hatched right here in Norfolk County.

“Amazing and Heart-warming”

Long Point Biosphere President Janet Dassinger is calling the successful pilot both “amazing and heartwarming” because it was achieved through exceptional dedication and care.  Each turtle egg has to be monitored constantly for hydration, temperature, size, and weight.

The Biosphere’s Lauren Nightengale led the measuring and checking work as well as the spring excavations and eventual release into marshlands.  The release of each hatchling has to be within a kilometre of its original nest and its precise environmental circumstance.  In this work, Lauren was supported by  funding from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) (trough the Long Point and Walsingham Priority Place’s Road Ecology Working Group), Biosphere ecologist Kari Gunson’s company Eco-Kare International, and Eco Canada.

“We now have an urgent need for materials and funds to build on the success,” says Dassinger. “We hope to establish the hatchery as a permanent facility serving the Long Point Biosphere Region.”

She adds that the Biosphere is working with partners like LPEA to establish a multi-faceted exhibit to serve local students, visitors, and area residents interested in wildlife, ecology, and the quality of life in our region.
